Antique Ford Tractor: Ford Super Dexta

[Return to the Shed]

This picture is a 1967 version. The Super Dexta was introduced in 1962 and had a displacement increase to 153 CID. The regular Dexta used a 144 CID engine. Between 1962 and 1964, this tractor was imported into the United States as the Ford 2000 Diesel.

  • I have a early 60 s model Ford 2000 Super Dexta for sale. Tractor has been parked for a couple years and not used. The tractor has a blown out rear tire and motor is locked; tractor was running when it was parked. It would make a excellent tractor to restore or a parts tractor. Tractor is in pretty good condition. Email if interested.

A mechanic told me that the 3 cly. Perkins should have a button near or on the injector pump. Before cranking, this should be activated, and it allows more fuel for starting. I can t find the button . Also, I need to know where to find the ser. number. That may help me find out the year, etc. Any help or advice is appericiated.

  • I am currently restoring a 1963 Super Dexta. I live in Centurion, a suburb of Pretoria and have sourced around 5 partial tractors including a 1960 standard Dexta with a F3/144 engine. My late father was the owner of the first unit sold in South Africa in 1959 and it wa operaional until 1995. South African Dextas all have cast iron front wheel rims and I believe they are unique. The castings wer produced by an engineering firm in Port Elizabeth and carry a marking DEXTA Made in South Africa . I believe that the reason for this was to afford the FordMotor Company of South Africa tax breaks based on weight proportion of loclly added parts such as tyres, wheels and weights. It is very difficult to source parts here and that is the reason I have decided to buy up all possible scrapped nits that I can locate. I am busy compiling a data base of usable spares in my collection.

Off the other side of the lever switch run to the appropriate terminal on the solenoid. This prevents the starter from cranking if the lever is not engaged.

They are great workers if you don t mind no power steering, tough cold wheather starts, and oil drips. I ve replace seals twice and still have small leaks. This tractor at 39 horsepower will do the work of some 50 horsepower tractors. I love mine. Now in process of restoring.

Great tractors, but you better park on a hill below 50 degrees. Our first Dexta with over 10K hrs still runs fine, but needs injectors cleaned, and tranny rebuilt. Then we will have 2 again. He figured and figured and then grandma told him to add a little more to the total. Good thing because he won. His prize was a brand new fordson super dexta with every type of implement you could think of. We still use this tractor on our farm in Saskatchewan and one day I will pass it on to my boys.

It was later purchased by a local contractor that continues to use it today around the home. I do have a question for anyone that may have some advice. A friend has a restored 1963 Super Dexter that he is having a problem with. The engine was running fine plenty of power up to the point he poured in a 5-gallon container of fuel while the engine was still running. Since, the engine has been low on power and slow to bring up the RPM's. A new fuel filter was installed and the fuel system bled down but no improvement in performance. Any suggestions? Thanks, Steve Barnes North Carolina

  • my family has a 63 Dexta and a 65 or 66 Super Dexta that has been in the family since about 1972-D and 1975-SD and we finally wore the Dexta out and decided to use it for a parts tractor. It has been a donner for the Super Dexta and so far all parts interchange. The lift quit working due to the lift cylinder blowing the o-ring and we had to fix it with an O-ring purchased from the local auto parts store, and the engine is a perkins diesel and the parts are easy to find since those engines were used in everything you could imagine ( the latest engine in the tractor came from a vermeer 440 trencher). If you really look you will find that many of the parts are still being made even today but you have to figure out what they are currently being used on. Yes there are a few parts that only work on those tractors but, there are a lot of the parts that have been adapted to other tractors and equipment. I hope that this will help everone in the search for the parts they need and the problems they run into.

  • I have been the proud owner of a 1964 Super Dexta for 9 years. First, for any one new to diesel, DO NOT USE STARTER FLUID, if you use it you can blow the top off the piston, I did have a man work on mine, he used either, it blew the rings off the piston, cost to reline and new pistons with all that goes with it was $1700.00. For a manual, go to the Ford Tractor Dealer and get the Ford Manual number F-201 it has information about Fordson Dexta, Fordson Duper Dexta, 2000 super Dexta, New Performance Super DExta. For parts for the engine go to a Massey Ferguson dealer, the Super Dexta uses the same engine as the current Massey Ferguson tractors. Ford can furnish most of the parts for hydrolics and the rest of the tractor. It is one fine machine, wouldn't trade it. Worth, in Okla. about $ 4500.00 to $ 6000.00 enjoy.

  • I'm looking at buying a Ford Super Dexta but don't know a lot about this model. Can you give me some information regarding price range (this model seems to be in good working order), horse power (3 cyl. diesel main and pto), any pros or cons to purchasing this model as a working tractor? Also, it seems to be leaking oil just behind the engine. Is this normal for this tractor? Thanks John

  • I just became the (proud?)owner of a Super Dexta. My biggest problem is not being able to find a great deal of parts for it. Of course the starter is the first problem I have run into. I was able to purchase a rebuilt one for around $200!! I have also located a supply of NOS Perkins Diesels (3.152) that may work on this tractor. I am checking into it to make sure the castings are the same. I guess half the fun of a Super Dexta is trying to find the parts. Also, does anyine know if the late model lucas starters with the 10 tooth drive will work on a Super Dexta, which originally had the 11 tooth drive?

  • I just bought a 63 Super Dexta for $1500. It looks like a pretty goo tractor for the money. The engine is in need of being rebuilt, and I located parts on the web for around $450 with shipping. If it works out well, this will be the only tractor I'll ever need to buy, and I will probably wind up restoring it. Ed Burress, Portland, Oregon.

  • I have found one of these tractors at a salvage yard and it needs a lot of work and parts. The owner said he would take 700 for the tractor just like it is with no promises. He bought the tractor from a lady who's husband was using the tractor and it just quit several years ago and they never tried to start the tractor again. I have heared the parts are high and can be hard to get locally in central Mississippi. I have also heard the tractor is not easy to start and the timing has to be set just perfect. The tractor needs fenders and a starter are these hard to find? Please e-mail me with any information you have.

  • We've owned a tractor of this model for years and it has sentimental value. We do have one gripe however and it's to do with the hitch. After so many uses the tractor is not able to lift anything or else it will slowly slip to the ground after lifting. Is there a more permanent fix that anyone knows about?
