  • Peter, Your tracks are coming off because either your bushings, pins or drive sprockets are worn. Probably all three unfortunately. Look at your Sprockets, does the right side of your teeth, if the tooth is at 12 o clock have a larger radius than the left that is the side that drives the crawler forward. if so the sprocket is worn. Try backing up your hill. if the tracks stay on that is because there is less use and thus less wear in reverse over time. Your tracks have a pin and a bushing between each link. Idealy, the bushings take the wear and are replaced before there is damage to the sprockets. once the bushings wear out the sprockets contact the pins and both start to wear, . When that happens all three will need to be replaced. the fact that your tension adjustment won t take the slack out of the tracks points to this condition. if your bushings are just starting to wear through, it is possible to rotate them 180 degrees. but that wont help if the sprockets and pins are worn too. Google CRAWLER TRACKS PINS AND BUSHINGS and your will find a lot of good information. Use Google to find a shop that does pin and bushing replacement. You can find used drive sprockets from repitable parts dealers on line. Avoid the advice of reversing the drive sprockets, swapping sides , if you replace your bushings. It s true that doing that will put the side with less wear on the forward side and will last quite a while. the down side is that if you have put new bushings on it will begin to prematurely wear those out every time you back up. If you can rotate rotate your bushings, you might be OK to swap sprocket sides. Good luck.

  • Just brought home a 420C in very good condition. Starts and operates perfectly. Bought it from an older gentleman who had this 45 years, and it has never spent a night outside in all those years. He recently put on new chains, sprockets, rolls and idlers. Also rebuilt the engine, brakes and clutches. Paid 3,000 and a promise to park inside every night. Bought this to work around my property. I have been in the construction business many years and owned many new large and small dozers over the years, this will the keeper .

  • Had a GREAT 420C, agricultural green , back in WV but had to leave it to come to OR. Really miss it as it was my means of getting around on the farm as I am a 100% disabled vet. It brought me many an hour of enjoyment and wish I had it here with me now....they are a good size for doing even big jobs. I had it rebuilt several years ago with new steering cluches and brakes and even had it re-painted and new decals applied, boy do I miss it. We live in the mountains just like back in WV and as it has snowed here the past few days I could sure have fun pushing snow....did I mention that I miss playing on my toy , as my wife called it. For those of you that have your 420 s KEEP them as they are a GREAT joy, if not even for work.

Starts and runs great. no fouled plugs. I m having trouble locating a new engine clutch disc and pressure plate. Serial #135375. Likes to pull plow trucks out of the ditch! Only had to replace the clutch, throw-out, and clutch plate since I bought it. Deere had all the parts. Only weakness is the tracks stretch easy, so I have to keep after the idler tension adjustment. If not, it will throw a track... but only deep in the woods and on a steep grade... ;- I love this tractor.

I have used it alot until 2 years ago. last week end my uncle asked me to take it to a tractor show in Alabama that he was a part of. There was alot of people interested in it and asking alot of questions.I am proud of the little crawler (not to mention the punch it packs) I have just about decided to retire it with a restoration and just show it off at the tractor shows. • I own an industrial 420C. My brother and I got it from our parents when they sold their ranch. I grew up using it to plow snow with as well as for back filling ditches, etc and my father used it on fire lines as our ranch was quite remote from fire fighting equipment at the time. People would stop in off the road wanting to buy it, but we opted to keep it and I'm glad we did. It has approx. 691 hours on it and is currently being rented out for finish work on roads, and around a small sand and gravel operation so it is still earning it's keep. People keep trying to buy it from me for way less than it is worth. It has a Holt hydraulic dozer that will swivel 2 or 3 points either direction or straight on. The hydraulics will pick up the front end of the dozer easily. It is definitely a keeper. 2 contributions to Farmshow Magazine have rated the 420c as a "Best Buy." Marvin Bjorge Polson, Montana

  • Just bought a 57 420c. Not as nice as the photo but seems in good overall condition. One problem is an oil leak in the left steering clutch. I'm new to crawlers and am interested if anyone has parts such as seals or can provide advice on the repair of this nice little machine. This unit has a dozer blade with manuel angle attachment. I noticed a crack in the weld on one side of the support for the blade. Is there any recommendations for how to attack this other than a weld over the existing crack? I don't believe that there is enough room for a fish-plate between the bracket and the edge of the track. Up here in Vermont we see a lot of snow and mud, is there any recommendations as to the maintainence of the lower rollers in this type of environment? Any help or leads for a source of parts would be appreciated. Thanks

  • I have a 420C five roller that was manufactured in about 1959 with a Holt front end loader. It was used in cleaning corrals for about fifteen years. Due to services on concrete the grousers are worn down to the nubs. We drug it out of the corral with tracks sliding and rebuilt the engine and turned the track pins. We installed a three point hitch and I have used it in landscaping my yard during the past ten years or so. It starts and runs great even in cold weather. I have rebuilt the track rollers, but it needs another set of left front idler support castings, as the shaft hole are badly worn and I cannot hold the idler shaft from turning with the front idler. Also it has a broken final drive hub which connects the large final drive sprocket to the track drive sprocket through a tapered spline shaft. The hub has broken away about a third of the splined hub area. It still operates, but the strength is questionable. One more thing; the steering clutches have a tendency to slip under heavy load even though I have replace the clutch discs. Is the any way to check or rebuild the pressure plate? Other than these few things, including some needed rebuilding work on the hydraulics, it is a great machine. Does anyone have a line on some parts? I will check this site occasionally for a reply. Thanks.

Runs and works good. Most parts in the undercarriage are 85 to 90%, front idler wheels were worn and have been built back up. Engine is very strong, doesn't smoke or burn oil and starts right up.
