Antique International / Farmall Tractor: Farmall B

[Farmall B Parts]     [Return to the Shed]

This tractor is very much like the Farmall A, except the engine is in the middle instead of offset to the left. The seat and steering is still offset to the right (like the Model A). All Model B's were "narrow front" with either a single or duel wheel.

The tractor originally belonged to a family that farmed in our county and having it as part of the Town s Hostetler Auto Museum would be very complimentary because of its history. Our problem is determining a serial number which I understand is on a small metal plate mounted on the seat upright. It is no longer legible. There is also a number stamped on the transmission case near the gear shift. This one reads 6823-D . Can it be used as a identification number in lieu of the missing serial number

  • I love this site!!! My husband has his grandfather's Farmall B Culti-vision - The manual has a year handwritten in as 1946 with a serial # - Is there a way to verify the serial # without the left seat support bracket? The tractor looks like everything is there down to the tool box but the seat is not original. Instead of a solid pan seat it has 2 inch holes all around the seat and is sitting on a very large spring instead of seat support brackets. Any info you could offer would be appreciated as to serial # and seat. We are looking to restore and are in need of all the help we can get.

  • About to start working on my B Farmall. This was my transportation when I was a kid. It’s a 47 (so am I) that my dad bought used in 55. It has the lift all, 2-row cultivator with rear sweeps and a frame mounted sickle bar mower, swinging draw bar, all laying in piles in the barn lot. Exhaust stack rotted off years ago and the engine is all froze up. For those interested Value Built can supply about any part for it (nothing is cheap) The engine has wet sleeves, new sleeves, pistons and rings are about $300 at value built. They carry nothing for the Exhaust driven lift. Does anyone know if parts are still available for it? Nebraska tests put it about 16 PTO hp and about 15 hp on the draw bar. No water pump on these tractors, most used thermo siphon to move water. I never knew it to overheat and we worked it hard pulling a 2-bottom plow. Check the oil with the 2 taps on the side of the oil pan. You must get oil out of the low tap, when you get oil out of the high tap the oil is full.

As it continues back into the block where it is heated again and rises back to the top again to the radiator. If you are filling it to the very top it will occasionly burp a little fluid ,but 2 quarts is a little much, you might need to have the radiator flushed or rodded.

I made an unslung power takeoff to and fabricated brackets to fit the old B. It took a while to do but it turned out great! I mowed my 3 acre yard with it for 4 years before the old B died. I took the B to a salvage yard and kept the mower and adapters in hopes of finding another old B to put it on. I got a lot of comments on this rig when I used it. It was a grass cutting machine! I am now mowing with a 140 Farmall with a Woods 60" mower. The tractor is great, but the Kubota mower deck mounted on an old B was far superior!

The man who sold me my B, said to use "regular gas" (nothing about leaded or unleaded), and it didn't take very long for the plugs to become totally fouled with a black, dry, powdery substance. When I described it to a tractor mechanic, he asked if I had been running unleaded gas and stated that was the problem. I now use an once of lead replacer for each 10 gallons of gas. That is because they don't make "regular leaded" gas any more. It might be possible to have the carb and other fuel-type parts converted so unleaded will work. to LOUIE JEUNE; I am very interested in how you pulled stumps.

I've never used the wide one because the narrow one or the BN rear wheel setting works great for a 60" mower. The tractor runs like a top, but the mower wore out. I bought a new New Holland 47-horse tractor a while back, and when I asked the salesman if in 50 years or more the four cylinder engine in the New Holland would run as smooth as the engine in my B, his answer was that of course he couldn't tell me that. • Ernie Henning is correct about the difference between a B and a BN. The B Farmall rear axle is wider on both sides than the right side of a Farmall A's rear axle. The BN, however, has the same width rear axle on both sides as on the right side of the Farmall A. Besides this difference in the rear axles, B's and BN's are the same tractor.

It had red plow beams, blue colters and hitch, with the wheels and spooks and hub International Cream color. My father bought one during WWII and had an older one from the 1930's. These were good plows and had heavy beams. The B will not pull this plow. We used a M. All this from my memory.

  • This is for Rick Payden who wrote on 10-30-99. Oh for the love of the internet. Isn't this great? I am going to restore a Farmall BN this year also. Maybe you have already got your engine to rotate, but let me pass this along for what it is worth. A friend loosened up an engine this way. Remove the spark plugs, squirt some WD-40 and some Mystery Marvel oil (penetrating oil ) into each cylinder and take a pipe wrench and put on the nut at the crankshaft pulley. Slip a section of pipe over the handle (8 to 10 Ft.)and add some weight to the end of the pipe. Let set till the weight overtakes the resistance ( rust or whatever ) then you won't damage anything. When you see the weight on the floor, the engine is loose. Add more WD-40 Etc. if you want, but it will work. Make sure the wrench is attathed to turn the correct way.Don't attempt to start the engine till the crankcase is serviced with fresh oil! Also you may loosen each connecting rod cap and using a mallet and a stick of wood, and push each piston, one at a time. Good Luck!

  • I aquired a FarmallB two years ago when I bought my place it was on it & the previuos said it went with the place. It had been sitting out in the weather & the exhaust stack, was broke off at the manifold. I had to pull the head off the engine because the motor was locked up. When I pulled the head I noticed the #3 cylinder had two inches of trash on top of it. So I cleaned up the trash as best I could with air & gas &, also had to clean up the #3 exhaust valve which had been open & let everthing in the #3 cylinder to begin with. I reinstalled the head & torqued nuts to 50pounds with old gasket although I dont recomend doing that. Bought 4 new spark plugs & set ignition wires & rebuilt the carb. Had to 2 new hoses for the radiator added water & gas & new oil.For about $35.00 & tried to start it up & to my suprise it started on the third try.I am using it now & aquiring every attachment I can find.Good Luck in your restorations everyone. If I can help anyone you can e-mail me at cole at axs4u.net

I even made a plate of 1/8 inch sheet steel as a patch and put it over the crack as reinforcement. I drilled six holes and tapped them to hold it in place, then sealed it with JB weld. If you do this, drill a hole at each end of the crack to prevent it from spreading. Works good; actually runs better than before! Add some stop-leak as a good measure.
