The first 44 appeared in 1946, which was a standard tread version. It was followed a year later by the 44 row crop version. In 1948 a diesel standard was introduced, followed in the next year by a diesel row-crop version. Production ended in 1955. |

Wayne Brocklebank wrote on Saturday, December 24, 2011 (PST):I have a 1956 Massey Harris model 444 tractor. For the live PTO clutch I need the 12 springs called spring, pressure . These springs are a coil spring about 1 and 1/4 inches high and about an inch in diameter. The part number I have is 1005518M1. The 444 Massey Harris makes a live PTO by putting a clutch on the right axle going to the right rear wheel. The clutch is located out side the transmission/differential housing, under the floor board on the right side of the tractor behind the brake pedals. It has absolutely no connection and is not in any way related to the main clutch of the tractor on the back of the motor. You can also contact me at phone number 519-881-2168 or 480-525-1332. Thanks

Lewis wrote on Monday, October 17, 2011 (PDT):Hello every body, Well I never operated a 44 but the man I work for had one, but what I did run in 1968 was a 444 massey harris with power steering and that tractor was bad to the bone! and I was fifteen at the time and now I am 58 and my Twin brother got that5 tractoe right now! and it is still bad to the bone! and it is steel strong, but it need a nut on the rear axle to hold the hub on and if any body has one please email me are call me at 919-842-2896 Thanks!

ED R . wrote on Monday, December 28, 2009 (PST): Dating the MH . Look under the tractor, just forward of the transmission housing on most you will find a date in the casting. That is the date that casting was made.As a general rule the tractor was built one year later .This date was omitted in later models , probably 1954/ 55. also the later MHF models 333-444 did not have it. also there is a book MASSEY FERGUSON TRACTORS by MICHAEL WILLIAMS -ISBN 0 71371898 6- THAT HAS EVERY SERIAL NO OF EVERY TRACTOR BUILT , BY MODEL AND YEAR This book is out of print but there may be some around . check the internet. this book was first printed in 1987 in england by blanford press.

All sheet metal is in very good condition, no dents or rusted out places, original front and rear lights. This tractor has been parked for over 25 years, no water in oil. Even the front grille is intact with no dents.

Dan Wallenta wrote on Monday, June 23, 2008 (PDT):This is fun reading the articles on the MH44. I also grew up with a 44D and later my Dad bought a 44 gas with a loader on it. Now both tractors have been in a shed and not used for over 20 years I believe the 44D is a 1949 and has a wide front on it and also have the narrow front somewhere. The 44 gas I believe is a 1954 but I will get the serial numbers this weekend when I am at the farm. Both are original and have not been rebuilt. Any idea what these might be worth Or where I could get info. on this.

Harvey Drake wrote on Saturday, February 23, 2008 (PST):My Dad bought a 1949 Massey-Harris 44 gas used when I was about 8. I loved to drive it and it was a real work horse. I think it put out 48 horsepower at the drawbar, but it had been rebuilt at least twice, and was built to 44 special specs. Origionally it was 44 horses at the drawbar, and about 52 at the PTO, I think. If you have a 6 cylinder model, they were not as powerful. I was sad when my father had to sell it and I didn t have money to buy it.

Ryan wrote on Monday, May 21, 2007 (PDT):My Grandpa bought a Massey-Harris 44 gas brand new in 1950. Since then its been overhauled twice, but to this day it runs and works like a charm. I love that tractor and there s no way I d get rid of that tractor for my life. It was used for a year to thresh in 1950. I still can t figure out the make of the thresher. I plan to restore the 44 Massey someday hopefully.

I was recently told the tractor he owned was very rare and in fact only 10 were manufactured. I am told that his tractor was restored and is now in a museum in Pennsylvania. Lester D. Bausch wrote on Saturday, September 16, 2006 (PDT): My father bought a "44 Massey" sometime in the early 50's it had been used and partialy burnt in a fire and rebuilt. He used it until he sold his farm in 1980. As a boy in school I spent many days plowing, discing, and springtoothing ground for planting. The Massey was later sold to a friend living in Scandia Ks. who had it restored.

My uncle is interested in buying it off of us and restoring it, because he is an antique tractor enthusiast, he enjoys restoring them. We have all the stuff required to rebuild the engine on it, but i think it is missing the front grille of the tractor. is it particularly difficult to locate those things, and are they expensive to buy?

It only has some minor dents and surface rust. The motor is locked up but the block appears to be good. Can anyone tell me roughly what it would be worth. It just wants to flow right through the head of the pump and back to the tank through the return. Someone told me that there are plungers sticking. Is this so? Does anyone know if it is safe to take the top of the pump off to look inside? Will this solve anything? Can I loosen the plungers myself? Any info would be apprieciated. Anyone? I spent many hours not only driving it, but also working on it, maintaining it, and modifying plenty of things on it. I now have my own 13 yr. old Daughter, and some of the best times we have had together have been with this tractor. She knows as much about as I do, and thankfully, can drive it as well...Just wish I could find a reliable parts resource.

It needs all tinwork, tires etc, but think the motor & transmition are OK? Also have a 1957 Mustang which I started to restore, but am not a tinker so has sat partly tore down, was running good when I started & is not seized up, has new tires. Could someone use any of these?
Arthur Ayers wrote on Monday, September 23, 2002 (PDT):Around 1984 or '85, my cousin bought and restored a 44 for pulling. He replaced the gas engine with a diesel. The 4 cyl. diesel that came in the 44D. He had lots of success with the ol' girl. I handled more suitcase weights than you can shake a stick at. He has since gotten rid of the 44. I was very upset when I found out he sold it, even though I didn't have the money to fix the cracked block (he thought that was the problem). I loved that tractor alot. I miss it to this day. Maybe I'll find it someday and bring it home.

The numbers on the trany is 184795M1 and under the number is an S with an F in the uper part of the S and what looks like a G0 in the bottom part of the S. On the uper part of the block it has the following number, MH L 260 G and under that number it has 701 95. On the lower part of the block it has the following number, H 260 A323. Ken J wrote on Wednesday, February 06, 2002 (PST):I have owed a 44 special for about 8 years.I bought it for $400 and drove it home,after cleaning the carburetor.I use it to brush hog and haul wood mostly.Awhile back the voltage regulator went out,so I put on a GM alternator.Now, since having to really tighten the narrow belt,the water pump is leaking.I'd like to find a rebuild kit or seal for the pump if possible.Otherwise I guess I need a new pump.I'd also be interested in a lift,hydraulics,and a blade,and maybe other parts.It's a 4 cyl.gas.Pump # is;1921. It also had power steering installed and that really made it great to drive. We pulled a 4-bottom plow with this tractor and it handled the plow with ease.

ken dyck wrote on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 (PDT):as a youngster i harrowed many an acre on a 44, our farm had 720 acres at the time. it would pull 12 (i think) sections of harrow in 3 rd gear, sometimes in 4th if the conditions were right. our hired hand plowed a 100 acre of clover with a 3 bottom plow but when he was done so was the exhaust manifold. dad bought the tractor used in the late 50's early 60's and the only rear dangerous occurence was that the nut holding one of the rear wheels on came loose several years after being worked on, if i owned one today i would check that. my brother found a 44 for sale and it is in good running shape. by tommorrow i may own it!!!! this will not be my working tractor, just a nostalga thing. old tractors belong in parades ken

Originally sold we think from the dealer in Winchester,IN. It has loaded one heck of alot of manure in its life and a good share of rocks too.It is semi-retired since we got a skid loader a few years ago, but I still used it to pick up a few rocks this spring, just for exercise.I like the looks of those 444's, they look streamlined.

I took the cover off from under the clutch and held the clutch peddle down and took a screw driver and forced it between the plate and disk, that worked for me. Sometimes if they set for awhile the plate will stick, when I know it will be awhile before I will use any of my older tractors I will block the clutch down to keep them open.

I used it for 17 years before I over hauled it, It was my big tractor till 1959, I still use it for lighter work, and have not overhauled it since that first time, It is still in good shape and looks really good, It has been a very good tractor, I also have a 30 model I bought new in 1952 I put a loader on it and I still use it very often, I don't know what I would have done without it, I have just overhauled it once but it does need it again, I also have 2 more 30s in running shape.

We overhauled it with M&W pistons for incresed HP. I believe we boosted the hp to 65 or more, we were never quite sure. But the difference was amazing, we could outpull a 560 IHC anytime,aw those were the good old days.
