Antique Allis Chalmers Tractor: AC WD45

[Allis Chalmers WD45 Parts]     [Return to the Shed]

This tractor was one of Allis Chalmers' best-known tractors. It was very similar in appearance to the Model WD but had 25% more horsepower. The Snap-Coupler hitch system became standard equipment in 1954. A diesel engine was also offered beginning the same year. In 1956 it became the first AC tractor to have power steering. A total of 90,382 of these tractors were produced.

I acually owen a wd-wd45 with a serial number in the middle of the two listed above. Does anyone know where i could find either parts or parts tractor in that serial number series I may be interested in another running one in that series.

  • I have my dads very first tractor he ever bought an AC-B . One of my very first memories of my dad and I spending time together was time on that big-little B-tractor. I was in high-school before I got around to doing anything with that tractor, but finely did get it running and loved every minute of it. After that, I ended up being hooked on Allis Chalmers Tractors. The very first tractor on the farm that my Grate Grandfather was able to afford was an AC-WC. Many years later, my Grandfather purchased an AC-WD45. Growing up I have many fond memories of on that WD45, making Hay in the summer, collecting sap in the snow for Maple Syrup, and fire wood when ever we had time to do it. Now with my Grandfather gone for some time and my dad with his small fleet of Case Tractors, the WD has been greatly neglected. But good news for the old Allis, I inherited it. She needs allot of work, new rebuilt engine, new rims and tires and some other small items that would make it a real prize on my Wife and I s farm. But after trying to get some info to fix it, I have found that I don t know as much about that tractor as I thought. Like were the best place to get good parts, or what Torque to Wheel Rating it has. If any on could help me out to get started, It would be greatly appreciated. Also would like to know what the Torque to Wheel Rating the WC and the B has also.

Bucket is two way pressure and the lift is up pressure only. Once I went through the valve I installed I lost pressure, I have jacked the pressure setting on the valve in as far as it will go. I know these systems are high pressure, what is a good number on pressure, or any other thoughts.

The three models most used were the G, the WD45 and the D17. They all were put to use on the farm. The G had an underbelly mower attachment and had cultivator attachment. It was used to cultivate tobacco. The WD 45's and the D17 were used for the other farm work. I have fond memories of family and these tractors. In fact when I think of family, orange tractors come to mind as well.

I would tie a string to the governer arm and pull it when I wanted high speed. I had a friend who could get ethyl alchol from his uncle's drug store. I mixed a quart of alky' with 2 quarts of gasoline. Had the muffler burnt out with our acetylene torch. Gutted.I could outrun all the local tractors except my buddy's Oliver 88" Diesel. His uncle's tractor. He made a injector to run kerosene into the intake. He would pull a string to let the kero in. we had 8-N'S ,77's M'S, H's, Some kind of M-M. We would run down this steep hill at night, wide open then let off the throttles. The WD 45 and the 88' diesel would shoot fire five feet in the air. The engines had to suffer, but in the late 40's kid's didn't think about it.The 88 diesel engine did a runaway one night. We were working on the homemade injector and dumped in 10 wt oil and kerosene mix. Way too much went in and the engine screamed for several minutes. We ran, thought the engine would blow. There is no shut down with all that in the intake. I'm 68 years old now and I wised up a little. Jim

This shutter controls the "air flow" not the coolant. Also I wrote that the WD45 had traction booster with a traction booster gauge and the WD did not. Actually the WD did have traction booster, but I don't think it had the gauge. Sorry about that.

Mike Mulligan wrote on Sunday, June 08, 2003 (PDT):
  • DISTINGUISHING FEATURES BETWEEN WD AND WD45. These tractors are very much alike, almost identical, but there are a few ways to tell the difference. If your tractor is original this shouldnt be a problem. The easiest way to tell for sure is to look for the serial number which is located on the back of the tractor above the step on the back of the differential housing. Before the number it will say either WD or WD45. Thats easy enough. There are other differnces. Starting from the front of the tractor and working your way back; Many of the WDs had a small hole in the right side of grill that surrounds the radiator. This hole was for a shutter that controled the flow of coolant to make the engine run hotter or cooler. 45s usually didn't have this. The hole is located almost at the top on the right side of the radiator(not on the wire mesh grill in front but just around the corner on the side. A much larger differnce is the engine. WDs had a 201 cubic in engine that was usually equiped with magneto ignition. The WD45 had a 225 cubic inch engine which usually had a distributer ignition. The hydrolics were similar but the WD45 had traction booster and there was a gauge below the gas tank that said traction booster on it an when you lifted something you can see the needle on the gauge move. Another big differnce is the transmission however there is an exception. WDs prior to 1953 had a sliding gear transmission with a straight shift lever. In 1953, the last year for the WD and also the first year for the WD45 the transmission was changed to a constant mesh transmission which had a curved shift lever. The WD45 had snap coupler as standard equipment and the WDs did not. However snap coupler kits were made available for the WD so it is not uncommon to see a WD with snapcouple. I hope this information is helpful. It is correct to the best of my knowledge but remember there can be exceptions, especially if the tractor is not original. These tractors are so much alike and many parts can be interchanged. You may find out that half of you tractor is a WD and the other half is WD45. I have a WD45 with a D17 engine and a WD transmission and rear end. GOOD LUCK!
Mike Mulligan wrote on Sunday, June 08, 2003 (PDT):
  • We have a WD-45 on our farm that we use alot. This tractor is unique because it is 3 tractors in one. After the original engine bit the dust, an engine from a D17 was put in because it was cheaper. So now it has more power and is faster on the road and also on the pto because the governed engine rpm is now 1650 compared to the original rpm of around 1400. Also after many years the transmission jumped out of gear(a common problem with allis chalmers). So we put the transmission of a WD on our tractor. The WD used a sliding gear transmission which after years of grinding and abuse will not jump out of gear(I know because we also have a WD and that has never jumped out of gear). However in 1953 the WD transmission changed to a constant mesh transmission that was also used on the WD45 which came out later in the same year. These transmissions had the curved shift lever instead of the straight lever of the previous transmissions, and these will jump out of gear. Allis tractors made after the WD45 up until the 7000 series tractors all(almost all)had this problem. The reason for this is usualy due to grinding the gears. When the transmission is new the teeth that engage when you select a gear have square edges on them. However if you grind the gears these edges become rounded off causing a curved edge which allowes the "collar"(I am not sure of the correct name of this part but it connects the gear to the output shaft) to slide off of the gear, putting your transmission into neutral. If you have an Allis that does not jump out of gear, be gentle and take you time so you do not grind the gears and it probably never will jump out. We also have an Allis Chalmers 200(probably my favorite tractor) that my dad bought used in the mid to late 80s. This tractor did not jump out of gear when he first got it. Unfortunately my grandfather and uncle always ground the gears when they drove it and it wasn't long before it jumped out of all the gears and the past few years we hardly used it. This past year my dad had the transmission rebuilt(which was very expensive) and now it is like a new tractor. We want to keep it this way so my dad and I will be the only ones driving it. On our farm we have all Allis Chalmer; WD, WD45, CA, D17, D19, 200, 7020, and a 6080. Anyone who wants to know the year of their WD or WD45 look for the serial number on the back of the tractor above the step on the differential housing. I have a book that tells the production information like what serial numbers were made in what year. If you get a book like this or if you go to an Allis Chalmers dealer you should be able to find out the year of your tractor if you have the serial number.

The WD tractor serial number is located on the top left differential brake housing. The year of this tractor was built from 1948 thru 1954 starting with #7 thru 160384. These numbers should start with WD then the number. The HP was about 35 The WD-45 HP was 45. The serial #'s for these tractors were from 146607 thru 236958. These #'s are located the same place as the WD's The prefix # will always start with "45" This tractor was built from 1953 thru 1957

Did all of the gasoline WD45's come with the "power crater" engine? We had some carb trouble about a year ago, I found that the bowl was actually cracked & the jets & other fuel passages were plugged badly. I was suprised to find that the quality of the steel in the cast iron bowl was good enough to weld, the rest was just a matter of a good cleaning & we were back in business with more power then I would have ever imagined. When I get ready to start restoring "allis" I would like some nice photo's for inspiration. If you have some good one's please send me some photo's & tell me about converting my 2 point to a 3 point. • My Grampa had a WD-45 with a wide front-end and a diesel engine in it. I'm not sure what year it was. I used to haul hay-wagons and oats and beans and unload manure with it all the time while I was growing up, man that was a fun tractor to drive. Then my Grampa had it totally redone, new paint job, decals, tires, the whole nine-yards. But instead of having the diesel engine redone, he swapped it for a gasoline engine. It never really was the same after that. Unfortunately the tractor was lost in a fire that destroyed the machine shed it was kept in.

Over the years they have been one of the most vesatile tractors ever produced. Just a reminder that Allis-Chalmers will be the featured marque at the 2001 I&I Farm Days in Penfield, IL.
